专业名称:Biochemistry MSc 生物化学

课程设置:

Biochemistry is the study of the chemical properties of biologically important molecules and processes in cells and tissues. It deals with the structure and function of cellular components, such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules. Biochemical understanding is fundamental to all biological disciplines. While much of modern biochemistry aims to provide an understanding of fundamental biological processes at a molecular level, it also contributes to the solving of medical problems and the discovery of safe and effective drugs. This programme allows students to gain research experience in contemporary biochemistry, which may be a different area to their first degree, and professional skills, before deciding on a future career in industry or academic research.

University of Leicester 莱斯特大学

课程名称:Bioinformatics MSc: 生物信息

课程设置:

This module teaches the basic skills necessary to progress through the course. We begin with an introduction to Linux and deal with the installation of software and applying updates and patches. The next component handles the intricacies of the Linux operating system including files, archives and compression systems. This provides the basis for more advanced aspects of configuring the computer and installing software. An introduction to the concepts of web-page design concludes this module.

Programming: Java and Databases for Bioinformatics

This module introduces you to the basic ideas for developing software to solve a problem. These ideas are introduced in the object oriented programming language Java. You will also be introduced to the development of graphical user interfaces and applets in Java. The second aspect of the module covers the use of computer databases, and more importantly for a bioinformatician, how they can be designed, built and queried efficiently.

Programming: Perl for Bioinformatics

Perl is a scripting language that enables bioinformatics housekeeping tasks, but is also powerful enough to be used in most bioinformatics webservers and applications. You will learn the key commands and programming structures used in Perl. Following the material covered in lectures you develop your programming skills by solving small programming problems in tutorials. The module enables you to write original Perl programs in a bioinformatics context, but also utilise existing solutions and structures in public domain resources.

Algorithms for Bioinformatics

Processing biological data requires complex computations on large volumes of data. This module introduces you to the algorithmic solutions of such computational problems and also covers the probabilistic models that underlie the data processing tasks in bioinformatics.

Gene and Genome Analysis

This module informs you of the broad role of bioinformatics in genetics and genomics. You cover basic molecular and cellular processes underlying gene expression, genome structure and evolution and the techniques used to study them. You will then explore genome sequencing projects and genome annotation as major bioinformatics applications as well as functional and comparative genomics. Statistical analyses underpin many informatic challenges in biology, so you will apply statistical tools (specifically the R programming language) to two major research topics: transcriptomics and molecular evolution.

Proteins

This module introduces you to the basic features of protein structures and methods used in structure determination. A central feature is hands-on training in the visualisation and comparison of protein structures. You will also learn theory and practice in alignment and comparison of amino acid sequences and how these can be used. We also introduce you to molecular modelling and discuss the drug design process, including visiting speakers from the pharmaceutical industry.

University of Nottingham 诺丁汉大学

专业设置:Industrial Physical Biochemistry MRes 生物化学

课程设置:

The award of MRes requires 180 credits for completion.

You will undertake a taught module 'Fundamentals of Biomolecular Science' during the autumn semester (20 credits) including lectures, tutorials and a practical.

The research project (140 credits) spans both semesters from the start of the course (late September) until the end of August the following year. This is an opportunity to complete a major piece of independent research under the supervision of a member of academic staff. The project can be undertaken wholly or partially in an industrial company’s laboratory.

Students also take 20 credits Graduate School Generic Training modules.

Fundamentals of Biomolecular Science D24BT7 (20 Credits)

This module covers: Macromolecular size and shape. Basic Physical Biochemistry (1st & 2nd laws of thermodynamics). Water as a solvent: pH, ionic strength. Concentration of solutions of macromolecules and its measurement. Dilute solutions. Solubility: Raoult's & Henry's laws. Colligative properties: Osmotic pressure. Non-ideality of macromolecular solutions. The volume and charge effects of macromolecules. Basic Laboratory Skills, handling experimental data, Error and approximations. Criteria for rejecting data. Indices, logarithms. Statistical funtion keys on calculators. Macromolecular hydration. Heterogeneity of macromolecular solutions - molecular weight averages. Flexibility of linear macromolecules - persistence length and radius of gyration. Absolute and relative methods for determining the molecular weight of macromolecules. Hydrodynamic and imaging techniques. SDS PAGE, Analytical Ultracentrifugation. Basic Colloidal Science, Phase Separation.

Statistics and Experimental Design for Bioscientists (10 credits)

This module explains the major principles and techniques of statistical analysis of research data without becoming too involved in the underlying mathematics. Now that computer software is very well established for data analysis, it is more important to understand WHAT a statistical test is doing (and thus whether or not it is appropriate) than to be able to perform the underlying calculations by hand. It is equally important to collect data in an appropriate and planned manner for later analysis. At the end of the course, participants should have an overall grasp of the major analytical techniques available, and how they relate to each other, and have developed abilities in experimental design, data analysis using appropriate software and presentation of results.

Writing and Reviewing Research Proposals (10 credits)

This module aims to develop your skills in analysis and writing of research proposals. Specific areas covered include: how to develop a research idea and write a grant application and peer review of research proposals.
